Kenya joins the GDLN family!

On November 9, 2007 the Kenya Development Learning Centre (KDLC) became the eleventh member of the Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) in Africa

The November 9th launch featured live events at the KDLC’s host institution, the Kenya Institute of Administration, and a virtual welcoming ceremony held via videoconference that connected Kenya to Senegal, Tanzania, and Washington, DC. In a display of the country’s strong support for the KDLC, the Vice President of Kenya, the Minister of State for Public Service, the Kenyan Ambassador to the United States, and other dignitaries attended the event.

The World Bank Institute supports the GDLN both as a provider of logistical and technical services and as a client. Participating from Washington, Acting Vice President of the Institute, Rakesh Nangia noted that WBI continues to benefit from GDLN’s ability to mobilize “practical knowledge that we can bring to people where and when they need it.”

As part of GDLN in Africa, the Kenya Development Learning Centre also joins the Association of African Distance Learning Centres (AADLC), established in 2002 to unify and coordinate the activities of learning centers across the continent. The KDLC will bring new expertise and knowledge to this group and will contribute to the work of GDLN Affiliates in Africa, who reach over 5,000 participants a year through learning and dialogue-based activities.

In Africa, GDLN is making a difference. Tanzania’s Minister of State noted that the Global Development Learning Center plays a pivotal role in accelerating knowledge transfer throughout Africa. In the context of Tanzania, she mentioned that the initiative paved the way to expose an average of 3,000 Tanzanians per year to specialized areas of skills and awareness without traveling out of the country.

Several participants noted that Kenya’s membership was pivotal in expanding the knowledge economy through GDLN in Africa. “Without Kenya being on Board, we felt like a car running on two wheels, we are now complete and we can run on full throttle” noted Tanzania’s Minister of State.

GDLN representatives from around the world also expressed their excitement about the new opportunities to exchange and share knowledge with Kenya on governance, the environment and HIV/AIDS. The global community in Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and East Asia prepared a special welcome for the event.
